Customer Support FAQ: Hard water and henna don’t mix

It’s important to use distilled water with Ancient Sunrise products like henna, cassia and indigo, and you can see why in this picture.

We held a spoonful of tap water over a flame until all the water boiled away. The white film you see in the spoon on the right is the residue from minerals dissolved in that water. Those dissolved minerals can interfere or react with dye from henna, indigo and cassia and cause unpredictable results.

As you can see in this map, most of the tap water in the US contains significant amounts of dissolved minerals. It’s OK for most uses but can cause problems when used with plant-based hair color ingredients like those in Ancient Sunrise products.

You can buy distilled water at almost any grocery store or supermarket. It will be free of the impurities that can cause undesirable colors or keep the plant dyes from binding to your hair.

For best results we recommend you use a treatment like Ancient Sunrise Rainwash to remove hard water buildup from your hair before you use any of our products or kits to color your hair.

Ancient Sunrise Rainwash is easy to prepare and use. To see a short video demonstrating how to mix and apply Rainwash, tap or click the image.
