Catherine's Curiosities - Articles on henna and hair by Catherine Cartwright-Jones, PhD

Henna as Part of a Manicure
Henna has been used to color fingernails since the Bronze Age. The color is permanent and will not chip off, though your fingernails will grow out. It takes about a month to six weeks for henna to grow out to the tips of your nails. If you henna your nails once a week, you can cover new growth, and the color will build up to a deep burgundy color. If you also henna your fingertips, the skin will be stronger and may stain nearly black.

Note: If a doctor needs to know the hemoglobin oxygen saturation in your blood, a pulse oximeter will be clipped over your fingernail. A pulse oximeter cannot read the oxygen saturation levels through regular fingernail polish, and a nurse will have to remove the polish. However, henna stains on fingernails do not interfere with oxygen readings
