Henna, Astronomy, and the Agro-Ecology of the Mediterranean Bronze Age
The goddess who oversaw the grain harvest and protected the fertility of the earth and harvest was Anat, the Virgin Warrior Goddess. Anat is often depicted with hennaed hands. In the epic agro-ecological Ugaritic myth of Baal and Anat, she adorned herself with henna in a metaphor for the wheat harvest for the destruction of the god Mot, the god of summer heat, and all of his followers. In the Ugaritic metaphor, the wheat harvest, the destruction of Mot, Anat prepared herself for a celebration for Mot, the god of summer heat. She hennaed her hands, kohled her eyes, braided her hair and put on her finest adornments.

What You Need to Know about Para-Phenylenediamine (PPD)
Para-phenylenediamine, or a chemically related -diamine is an ingredient used in virtually all oxidative hair dyes, both store-bought and used in salons. The oxidative dye process is formulated to quickly penetrate and stain the hair strand any color, including lightening hair by removing the pigment from the core of the hair and dyeing over it. Brunette and black hair dyes contain higher concentrations of PPD, though all colors can contain PPD.
